Schedule or start now – online conference or webinar – up to 120 users ad-free using OpenMeetings

A free browser-based app that allows you to instantly set up  a conference on the Web. You can use your microphone or webcam, share documents on a white board, share your screen and record meetings. It is available as hosted service, no downloads or installation required to get you started.  Select your desired session settings from conference room (1-16 users) or as a webinar (up to 120 users).

Start a session right away or schedule a meeting in advance using the integrated calendar. You can also receive a reminder about your session as an iCal or sent to your email.  You can invite others directly from the app interface by searching through ‘current online members’ or your own contacts by clicking on ‘add external’. Just type in the name and email (you only need to provide the email– other fields can be left blank) and your members will be notified via an email from the system about your upcoming event.

This is a free app that is NOT ad-supported (so might not be free forever or ads might start appearing)… Users can also easily resize or minimize unwanted screen areas (not just move them a little but almost wipe them out) which is a nice feature and offers typical users the ability to ‘customize’ and make the most of the view area that is important to them, not just the presenter or the app (and ad supported) developer(s).

This is a very plain looking interface and some may not find it as ‘inviting’ and user-friendly and even the generated emails are plain and could also be a little confusing for some. As when we tested, our email was sent without us being able to include any comments or adjusting the format/style and the end was is as noted below:

Many in the US might not immediately recognize the date format (the meeting request was scheduled for June 3, 2011 at 7:30pm and all the emails include the statement, “Click this link to participate in the conference The link may only work for a certain period!” which might be okay when you schedule a meeting now but is a little misleading when the meeting is not for another couple of days.  The system does however, allow for you to send a URL of the meeting room (we prefer this approach) so that you can send the invitation in your own email client, personalize the message, include a meeting agenda, etc…

We had to deduct a little in the grade due to some of the format/settings noted above and because this might not be as ‘nice looking’ or easy for some to use right away. However, this app still offers a lot of great features for free, no support ads to contend with, works behind firewalls, and does not require any downloads or installations for you or your participants.
